The clown nose is a mask. As Pierre Byland famously said when he first introduced it as part of the Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq training. Clown's nose is the smallest mask in the world. Unlike other masks such as Commedia, neutral, or larval masks, which cover somehow, this one does the opposite. This one uncovers a clown’s face. It works like a magnifying glass or bulls' eye because it brings all the attention right to the middle of your face, right between the eyes; it opens your face and softens your brain. This Red nose is a mask, but the smallest in the world. This means the other can see everything even when one is wearing this. The clown mask doesn't hide anything from the viewer besides the tip of the nose. Viewers can see everything. It distances you just enough from yourself to help you find this other very playful, very physical, very open, foolish, extremely childish creature that we all call a clown.
